Dietrich von der Ropp was temporarily on board U 35 at the request of commander Hans-Rudolf Rösing for the patrol to Ponta Delgada (Azores). After this patrol, he reported back to U 11. He later received command of his own U-Boat, U 12, and was killed when it encountered a mine in the English Channel in early October 1939. His body washed ashore in France, and was buried there.
